It was big. No bigger than that…

Last winter, on a snowy day, four wizards sat down to play Cory’s ALICE cube. Life got busy and I didn’t write anything up. But by request, today I’ll share a few pics and tell a few stories. I hope you enjoy!

I love seeing the cards that I owned as a kid making a dent on the battlefield. What’s a good way to stop a 15/6 trampler? Scars of the Veteran! That’s right. The card came up big in this match. All of these cards I wanted to make work so much, and here they are absolutely demolishing.

Here’s just a hoard of red and white guys staring down some quadrupeds. One of the things I love about cube is the singleton nature. I spent hours as a kid pouring over each and every piece of card art (I still do). The fact that each of these game pieces represents a particular summon from Dominaria and tells a unique story warms my cold heart.

The big black baddies are dominating the battlefield. Minotaurs and undead can’t keep up with the epic vampire and demon. Baron Sengir was one of the first “chase rares” that I acquired as a kid. The view of him on that balcony is captivating, just as a master of vampires should be. I remember reading in an old duelist about the choice of venue for the art and Pete Venter made an excellent choice to really capture the majesty of the Baron.

This was my highlight of the day. My deck was mostly designed around getting the kraken in play for maximum fun (and profit). I did manage to play it and win a game with it. I count that as success! The rest of the games he didn’t show up and I went 1-2. Iceberg worked as expected, but wasn’t enough to save the day. However the flavor is perfectly on theme.

Decks

Red/white birds is a classic archetype. I like where he went with this.

He plays both “bugs” in this BugBind list. 5/5 stars.

The dark of winter took over this wizard’s heart as he played the black magiks and their friends. Very cool.

I had the fatties, but not enough stuff to do in the early game. My hypothesis about this block was that it is so slow and clunky that going over the top will win no matter what. It didn’t turn out to be entirely true, but I still got to do some sweet things.

Conclusion

Is this a keep? The cube is great and a fun take on some of the years that I played the most magic. I would absolutely play it again. I’ve even been inspired to do my own riff and build one myself
