In less than 48 hours, the Rocky Mountain Yetis will host its first ever Cube Event at Yeticon 4, and it’s about time. While the Yetis have long gathered to play constructed Old School formats, we have, since our earliest days, back when masks were still required attire, engaged in cubing to test our spontaneous deck building skills. And since the fateful day when I introduced the founder of the Yetis himself to cubing, I think it’s safe to say that cubing has become a bit of an obsession for him. So, I’m thrilled that this year we are able to gather again at Yeticon, shine the spotlight on cubing, and give all the players an opportunity to draft a wild deck of cards, and sling powerful, strange and unexpected spells at their unsuspecting opponent.
So what exactly do we have in store? Well this year, there will be eight cubes available at this first ever Yeti-Cube event, and they represent a fantastic range of what Old School and Pre-Modern have to offer. So let’s take some time to check them out.
The Jeweled Bird – Old School Ante Cube https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/OSAnte

This is the first cube I designed, and though it’s had many iterations over the years, it retains it’s most defining feature: games are played for Ante, and you must play with everything you win. This cube features a range of cards from Alpha to Fallen Empires, and though it is unpowered, some of the most powerful, interesting and unique cards are available to brew with. This year’s version of this cube even includes a small portion of custom revisions to existing cards, like the Jeweled Bird above, so pay close attention to everything you draft as it may not always be what you expect.
The Rocky Mountain Yeti Dominaria Cantos Cube https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/36gu8
Created by the original Rocky Mountain Yeti himself, this cube has everything a high power mage could ask for. The list for this cube is fully powered, and draws from beyond the typical old school card pool, pulling deeply not only from all of the classic old border sets, but also select old border cards from newer sets as well.

The Cube of Misfortune https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/rmycom
Perhaps the most challenging of all of the cubes presented, this cube has been a labor of love between myself and the OG Yeti, for the past six months or so. This cube was created with the intention of highlighting the lesser known cards printed between Alpha to Alliances. This cube will puzzle even the most grizzled of old school veterans, and force them to think of creative uses for what may be perceived as the least optimal, under-played, and probably forgotten cards. Many surprises lurk in the corners of this cube, so be on the look out for surprising strategies, crunchy combos, and slower, more thought provoking games. Just don’t get too attached to the deck you draft, you may instead find out just how good your neighbor is at pulling together a playable pile from this weird and endearing group of cards.

The Rocky Mountain Yeti Premodern Kitchen Table Cube https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/rmypmc
This is the second cube created solely by the OG Yeti that is being presented at Yeticon 4. This cube “is a singleton cube and contains many of the powerful cards from the era but is not designed to be power maxed.” Expect representation all the classic archetypes, and a fun and nostalgic draft experience that celebrates the best of the early days of the game.

The White Border Sleeveless Cube https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Whiteboarder%20Barcube

This cube is crafted for those who long to rifle shuffle naked cards, just like we did at lunch time back in the old days. I may have gone a bit overboard packing this cube, but then again, there’s nothing quite like cracking packs, even if they are homemade.
The Mirage Block Cube https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/MirageBlock
Do you like Phasing? How about Flanking? Maybe you prefer smashing face with a Hammer of Bogarden, or the simple pleasure of seeing just how many snakes are actually in that basket? If you answered yes to any of this, then this is the cube for you.

The Age Of Ice Desert Cube https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/Ice%20Desert
This cube will have you journey to the Ice Age, forge Alliances, and perhaps even take a trip to Ulgrotha and visit the Homelands. But wait! There are no deserts in any of these places, why is this called a Desert Cube? Well, that’s because for this cube, you must draft all of your lands, including many that are covered in snow, and reap the benefits, or suffer the drawbacks, of all that this entails.

The Branching Paths Cube https://www.montrealtundrawolves.com/branchingpaths
Finally we come to the last cube available for drafting, and it is a special one indeed. Designed solely out of cards from the custom set known as Branching Paths, which was created by the Montreal Tundra Wolves, this promises to be a cube unlike any you have seen before. That because so few of us have seen or played with these “new” old school cards. Be prepared to brew some strange and exciting decks with this cube.

Even the greatest fighter-mages will learn what it means to cube.
Soon the mages, warlocks, wizards and plainswalkers will gather to see just who is the greatest drafter of all… at least at this year’s Yeticon anyway. And I for one can’t wait to see how it all unfolds, who goes home with the prizes we have prepared, and who can draft their way to be the lord of the battlefield.
